PARVO PUPPIES
Parvovirus

Parvovirus is a viral disease of dogs. It affects puppies much
more frequently than it affects adult dogs. The virus likes to grow
in rapidly dividing cells. The intestinal lining has the biggest
concentration of rapidly dividing cells in a puppy's body. The
virus attacks and kills these cells, causing diarrhea (often
bloody), depression and suppression of white blood cells --
which come from another group of rapidly dividing cells. In very
young puppies it can infect the heart muscle and lead to
"sudden" death. This is a very serious disease. Some puppies
infected with parvovirus will die despite prompt and adequate
treatment. While no extremely accurate statistics are available, a
good guess is probably that 80% of puppies not treated for
parvovirus will  die.

Prevention: Vaccinations remain the mainstay of prevention.
Parvovirus is still capable of causing infection for several days
prior to the time the vaccines can work to protect against the
disease, though. For this reason, it is best to avoid areas that
might be contaminated with parvovirus until after the puppy has
received a vaccination at twelve weeks of age or older. It is
recommended that vaccination start at 6 weeks of age and that
puppies receive vaccinations at two to four week intervals until
they are 12 to 16 weeks of age. We prefer to vaccinate at 6, 9
and 12 weeks for this virus but puppies with high exposure
potential may have to be vaccinated more often.

FACES OF PARVO
APRIL 6, 2010 DAY 1: WE NOTICED THAT THE PUPPIES
WERE DEPRESSED, NOT INTERESTED IN FOOD OR
WATER.  WE STARTED THEM ON TAMAFLU, ALBON,
FLAGYL.  THEY LOOK REALLY BAD.  ESPECIALLY
LITTLE RUBY.  HER SISTER (RED/WHITE) LOOKS BAD
BUT SEEMS TO FEEL A LITTLE BETTER.  THE BLACK
AND TAN MAKE IS GETTING ALONG THE BEST.

DAY 2,3 4: WE ADDED PANACUR TO DEWORM. IT IS
AMAZING THAT THESE LITTLE BABIES COULD BE FULL
OF SO MANY WORMS.  THEY ALL FEEL VERY POORLY
AND WE WILL START SUBQ'ING THEM TONIGHT.

DAYS 3-5 WE CONTINUED INITIAL TREATMENT AND HAD
TO ADD SUBQ FLUIDS TO KEEP THEM HYDRATED.  WE
ALSO ADDED PUPPYCAL FOR NUTRITION. PUPPIES ARE
HANGING IN THERE.  THE BLACK AND TAN MALE SEEMS
TO BE BETTER.  THE THREE GALS JUST DONT WANT
TO EAT AT ALL.  FORCING PUPPYCAL AND PUSHING
SUBQ.

DAY 5-7: WE STARTED OFFERING CHICKEN AND RICE.
2 WERE VERY INTERESTED BUT LITTLE RUBY AND HER
SISTER WERE NOT.  THE BLACK AND TANS ARE EATING
FINALLY.  STOOL IS STILL VERY RUNNY.

DAY 8: LITTLE RUBY HAS PERKED UP.  SHE ACTUALLY
ATE SOME CHICKEN BREAST TODAY.  I THINK WE MIGHT
HAVE A TURN AROUND!

DAY 11: WE HAVE SOLID POO!!  IT IS AMAZING HOW
THESE LITTLE ONES MADE IT DESPITE ALL THE ODDS.

APRIL 16TH.  PUPPIES ARE DOING REALLY GOOD.  I
WILL VACCINATE THEM TOMORROW.  IT HAS BEEN A
LONG TIME SINCE WE WERE ABLE TO SAVE A WHOLE
LITTER.  THANK YOU TO THE DOGGIE KARMA GOD.
WE HAVE LOST MANY PUPPIES TO
PARVO.  IT IS A DEVASTATING
DISEASE THAT IS A HORRIFIC WAY
FOR A PUPPY TO DIE.

PLEASE VACCINATE YOUR PUPS
ACCORDING TO THE
RECOMMENDED VET SCHEDULE
AND UNTIL THEY HAVE RECEIVED AT
LEAST 3 SHOTS, KEEP THEM FROM
PLACES THEY CAN GET EXPOSED.
RUBY TODAY. APRIL
